Men have observed the stars for more 30,000 years. In fact, star maps existed long before maps of the Earth.
The ancient Sumerians are generally credited with first mapping the constellations and planetary movements. Ancient Egyptians predicted floods, famine and other events based on planetary alignment. Archeologists unearthed what many believe to be the first astrologer’s board. It was discovered in 2012 in Croatia. The artifact dates back two millennia and features engraved images of the Cancer, Gemini and Pisces astrological signs. But one of the least talked-about astrological breakthrough in history demonstrated both the power of the cosmos and ingenuity of men.
Divers discovered the Antikythera Mechanism in 1901 off the Greek island with the same name, according to the Smithsonian. It was aboard a merchant ship that sank sometime in the first century B.C.E. The 2,000-year-old hand-held “astronomical calculator” helped the Greeks predict eclipses and other astronomical events. Researchers refer to it as the “first analog computer” due to its relative sophistication.
What is the Antikythera Mechanism?
Scientists have been trying to figure out what exactly the device does since all that was found was 82 corroded, rusty fragments. That constitutes about one-third of the original mechanism. But researchers at the University College London announced in March that they are creating a theoretical model of the machine.
Dr. Tony Freeth, the lead researcher on the project, said in a statement that his team’s model is the first to incorporate all the physical and written evidence as to the device’s structure and function. Two important pieces of data were derived from X-rays of the front cover. It highlights the numbers 462 and 442. The previous refers to the synodic period of Venus. The latter is the synodic period of Saturn. Dr. David Higgon said the team matched evidence of two fragments and found the exact 462-year planetary period related for Venus.
Researchers are trying to replicate the machine as closely as possible to the mechanism constructed during that time period. Thus they are using no lathes or other technology that was not available then.
