Society has traditionally focused on self-esteem issues of girls and women. Baby Boomers and Generation X were bombarded with stories of how girls “are not allowed” to speak up in class in secondary school. Women faced myriad challenges in the workplace that men did not, according to U.S. folklore. But it’s men that are facing unprecedented challenges not only education and career-wise, but also with relationships.

Women were 57% of U.S. college students in 2017, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Granted there are many more options in the 21st century for post-high school education and business opportunities. But men were 58% of the college student population as recently as the mid-1970s. A 2019 report from the Harvard Business Review states that women score better in 17 of 19 competencies related to leadership.

The #MeToo and #TimesUp agendas have also shaken the confidence of men. Pariah status is just a wrong wink or misspoken word away in today’s society. Furthermore, dating and courtship have been reduced to swiping photos on smartphones. Masks are required in many U.S. jurisdictions due to COVID-19. Thus traditional, spontaneous dating is out of the question.

Men have taken a beating in 2020 with the pandemic, mass unemployment, losing their businesses, and struggling with relationships. Now is the time to work on yourself. There’s only so much you can control in this world. Your self-confidence is one of those things you have completed control over. Here are five tips to increase your self-image.

Set achievable goals

The alpha brain wavelength is associated with accomplishment. Finishing a one-hour workout, cleaning out your garage, or catching up on work gives you a sense of accomplishment, placing you in an alpha mindset. The more little things you accomplish, the more your mindset stays in that alpha mode.

Every night before bed, write down one or two things you will accomplish the next day. These don’t need to be major, life-changing activities. We’re talking about things that require a little thinking and ambition. Cook yourself and family a meal. Write a new blog post on your website. Sign up for an online class.

Embrace your assets

It’s easy to point out flaws in ourselves. Overweight. Balding. Everyone is their own worst critic. Self-confident men embrace both their flaws and assets. The latter is what you should focus on to balance out your self-assessment.

Make a list of your personal assets and place this list somewhere you can see it everyday. Not your money and property. But your mental and physical attributes. Tall men are inherently more attractive to women. Thus being 6’0 or taller is an asset. Mechanical inclination, like being able to fix cars and computers, is an asset.

Lift weights

This is perhaps the quickest and most efficient way to quickly boost self-confidence. A comprehensive workout plan consisting of both cardio and weights is ideal. But hearkening back to the achievable goals, lifting weights is great for a boost in body self-image and how you feel physically overall.

Biceps, pectorals (chest) and deltoids (shoulders) are the areas guys most want to improve. If you’re not a gym person, order weightlifting bands and create a home gym. Search Youtube for instructional videos if you’re completely new to weight training. You’ll start noticing a difference within a couple of weeks if you remain consistent. Always make sure to stretch before and after your workouts.

Sexual performance

This is a sensitive subject for men. The Massachusetts Male Aging Study from 1994 found that 52% of men suffer “some form” of erectile dysfunction. The data are old, but this study is still cited by scholars and researchers alike. Anxiety, pornography and psychological issues are the primary culprits.

Of course there are quick fixes for this issue in 2020 if necessary. It’s best, however, to get to the root of any potential problems. Start by drinking pomegranate juice and taking red panax ginseng everyday. Both are known to increase blood flow and libido. Mindful meditation is also known to help men overcome sexual anxiety.
